Yamaha vs Kawai vs Steinway | Piano VST Comparison | Yamaha CFX vs Hamburg Steinway D vs Kawai SK-EX
youtube
Anyone whose been a subscriber to our channel or blog will know we’ve spent a lot of time over the past couple of years exploring the world of piano VSTs. As a result, our resident piano reviewer and company president Stu Harrison has become something of a VST aficionado.
In today’s video and companion article, Stu will be joined by his wife Annie Bonsignore, who also happens to be a professional vocalist and frequent collaborator of Stu’s.
Annie is going to randomly toggle between three meticulously recorded VST instruments from some of the most well-known brands - Yamaha vs Kawai vs Steinway and some of their high-end models with the Hamburg Steinway D-274, Shigeru Kawai SK-EX and Yamaha CFX Concert Grand Pianos - to see if Stu can actually tell the difference between these three pianos without knowing which one he’s playing and hearing.
This should be a good test to see how our pre-conceived notions about a given instrument affect our musical perception of said instrument since Stu will not know which instrument he is playing.
We’ll get started here with a little bit of background information.
Yamaha vs Kawai vs Steinway - Background Information & Piano Design
Let’s start by covering some of the differences that make a Yamaha, a Steinway, and a Kawai different from one another. These are three of the most recognizable piano brands in the world, and in terms of full-sized concert pianos, their flagship concert grand pianos- the Hamburg Steinway Model D, Yamaha CFX and Shigeru Kawai SK-EX - are among the most commonly selected instruments by pianists who perform in concert halls and with symphony orchestras.
All three piano manufacturers and these specific pianos have a very interesting pedigree and interesting history, but for our purposes, what’s really important is to look at the major differences in the design and materials used in these instruments that contribute to the unique sound that they each produce.
We’ll take a quick look at each instrument.
Hamburg Steinway Model D Steinway Model D - VST UI
The Steinway & Sons Model D’s most people in North America are used to are of course New York Steinways which use Sitka spruce for their soundboards. Since we’re working with a Hamburg Steinway Model D Concert Grand Piano made at the Steinway factory in Germany here, the soundboard will be either be an Austrian or Bavarian white spruce. In either case, it would be slow growth, high altitude spruce grown in the 700 to 1,000-meter range, such as what would also be used in other high-end European pianos like a Bosendorfer or Steingraeber.
This soundboard material is different from what Yamaha and Kawai are using, and the Steinway has some other things that make it unique as well. For one, they use an inordinate amount of Hard Rock Maple in their inner and outer rims and feature a remarkably strong pinblock.
There are several aspects of Steinway design which make it unique. It uses an inordinate amount of Hard Rock Maple in their inner and outer rims, which gives it a very specific tonal flavor that is often described as a blended tone.
The Hamburg Steinway also has a treble bell, and in combination with the specific duplex scale, this tends to create a very particular treble experience with an ambient wash and well-defined attack. Steinway D’s are also known for having an extraordinary dynamic range to them, to the point that it’s almost impossible to make them distort.
Now, they’re not known for having the widest tonal palette compared to other fine instruments, but in terms of dynamic potential and ability to project across the range, they’re really quite exceptional and one of the main reasons Hamburg D’s are often cited as one of the top two or three concert pianos in the world.
Pianos from the Hamburg factory are also generally regarded as a tier above their New York counterparts, and that includes the Steinway Model B, Steinway Model A and Steinway Model M.
Shigeru Kawai SK-EX
The Shigeru Kawai SK-EX has borrowed quite a bit from the Steinway grand piano heritage, as have most modern pianos (fun fact, Kawai manufactures the Steinway sub-brand Boston). The SK-EX uses vertically laminated bridges, just like the Steinway does and a Hard Rock Maple cap, just like the Steinway does also.
The rims also feature some Hard Rock Maple, though not as much as the Steinway, and it also blends a number of other hardwoods as well. The SKEX does not use a treble bell, and the approach to the treble generally in the Shigeru is quite a bit different. The SK-EX also uses Sitka spruce, just like a New York Steinway but different from the Hamburg’s Austrian or Bavarian spruce.
The end result is a tone that isn’t as blended as the Hamburg Steinway, but at the same time, it’s not as clear and defined as a C.Bechstein or Bosendorfer’s tone. Really, it's sitting somewhere in the middle and is overall very warm but also very colorful.
It’s capable of both a very intimate sound but can also be pushed for serious fortissimo volume and power as well. In general, SK-EXs are often regarded as very versatile instruments which is why they’re so popular among
Yamaha CFX Yamaha CFX - VST UI
The Yamaha CFX first hit the market several years ago and served as the next-generation update to the CFIIIS concert grand piano, which was the Yamaha Corporation’s previous flagship model CF Series 9 footer.
That said, the CFIIIS was seen a step below a Steinway or Shigeru Kawai, whereas the new CFX is at a level where it can now properly compete with these other two concert grand pianos by upgrading the specs to what one would expect out of a top-tier instrument,
For instance, they’ve gone with a high-quality European spruce soundboard and are also vertically laminating their bridges. The rim consists of a blend of Beech and Mahogany for its own unique tonal experience as part of what they’ve called their Acoustic Resonance system.
They’ve also improved the piano wire and bass string material and levelled up their hammer design while going with a very realistic ivory substitute they’ve dubbed as Ivorite for the white keys and a matte finish for the black keys.
The end result is a tone that is still on the brighter end of the tonal spectrum, but the middle partials are much more present than they were previously. Overall, it’s a more natural sound than what Yamaha has been able to achieve in the past.
Note that the CFX is also available as the Disklavier Enspire Pro version (DCFX) which allows you to record and playback right on the CFX as a digital piano can.
Piano VST Comparison Kawai SK-EX - PIano VST Comparison
As mentioned above, we’re not going to be in a showroom playing the actual acoustic piano versions of these musical instruments, but rather VST versions. In the case of the Hamburg Steinway Model D and Yamaha CFX, we’re using the Vienna Symphonic Libraries Synchron engines, while for the SK-EX, we’re using the Kawai’s NOVUS NV5’s SK-EX Rendering Engine, which combines a multi-channel sample of the SK-EX with a resonance modeling engine.
The reverb is set up as similarly across the 3 samples as possible, and we’ve tried to make the settings as evenly as possible as well.
Stu’s Blind Playtest
We would definitely recommend checking out the video to see and hear the blind playtesting for yourself. In the end, Stu was able to guess 9 out of 10 right, only at first mistaking the Hamburg Steinway D for the SK-EX, but he would subsequently realize this and eventually change his answer.
Stu is obviously a gifted and highly experienced piano player, but it does speak to how distinct these three samples truly are with how accurate his blind play-testing proved to be.
Annie’s Ranking from a Vocalist’s Perspective
We’d also recommend checking out the latter portion of the video to hear professional vocalist Annie Bonsignore sing along with each sample and give her feedback as to how she would rank in terms of compatibility with a vocalist.
She ultimately enjoyed the SK-EX the most due to its warmth and very dynamic tonal range. She had the Yamaha CFX ranked second and liked it overall, she just, however, felt it was a little bit too bright and perhaps a bit like an upright piano.
In third, she had the Hamburg D as she felt it was least equipped to compliment the contours of the natural human voice.
Closing Thoughts
Thanks very much for reading! This has been a very interesting experiment comparing these three superb concert grand piano samples that we hope you’ve enjoyed.

sometimes in academic-focused discussions about the concept of celebrity and parasociality and whatever I'll often see people use Miku as a framing device specifically as a hypothetical Perfect Celebrity, a virtual celebrity who can never do wrong and never gets tired, she will always say what you want to hear, etc. etc. and LIKE I UNDERSTAND why people are so engrossed in that idea, it's kind of what Crypton themselves push instead of focusing on software LOL (sorry im a little mean to them... well maybe things will change come august. crypton i am waiting. crypton i am waiting.)
but I feel like focusing so much on that is kind of buying into marketing a little too much? i really dont think that miku, from a media studies/visual culture/art historical standpoint at least, is akin to like a little digital lady gaga we can puppet for our own desires. i think that's missing the forest for the trees. in a visual culture sense, miku is much closer to that of like, a singing mickey mouse with much looser copyright restrictions LOL
the amount of videos ive seen and essays ive read that describe miku as like some kind of pawn that secretive anonymous actors force to speak for them and im like. okay i know this is rich coming from the guy in the miku jacket with the miku bag and cannot go 3 hours without googling a vocal synthesizer just to look at them BUT LIKE. i think we're overhumanizing her in this context like she's just a mascot you guys... its fun to think about some spooky scifi transhumanist concepts with her, but in the end she is a cartoon character representing the vocal equivalent of a piano VST in a DAW that regular people (not secretive anonymous actors with nefarious intentions) use to make their music and art
theres a lot of really interesting discussions on capitalism and all that with her as a framing device but like we neeeeed to focus on the real ass people making songs with her, illustrating her, manufacturing her merch, programming her software, etc. if we're talking about that 'cause like. again i am the person sleeping with the miku blanket with miku keychains attached to everything i own but like. she doesn't have feelings my dear academics. its okay for fans to focus on her emotions thats just what we do but my dear essay writer i found on jstor i need you to understand she is 1s and 0s. she is a mascot character. why are we focusing so much on her personal psychology.............. she doesnt have a braaaaaain..........
AND thats not to diminish the cultural impact of mascots, hell with my aforementioned mickey comparison i think we can realize just how much power a small illustrated character can have - its just i think you cant talk about a mascot the same way you talk about celebrity yknow... i just think theyre a little bit different even with some overlapping aspects and i think mascots need to be taken as they are, rather than pushed into a different media studies narrative. if that makes sense
#sorry this might be incomprehensible if you dont read too many media studies visual culture ass academic writing#like a giant shadow floating underneath ur boat. this is just a problem ive been seeing in like anything that mentions miku#although we vocal synth fans are vicious. we are the kings of um actually. we are painfully deep into our interests. so i try to give leewa#but MAN......... too much writing about her in english seems to forget shes a piece of software????#and maybe im biased because a big reason for my interest in vocal synthesis is the technicalities behind the sortware itself but like#i feel like thats pretty relevant. i also cant help but wonder if part of the reason shes talked about so like#weirdly in north american academia is because shes a japanese property?#people are not talking about mickey mouse like hes a puppet trapped by the disney corpo.... he IS the disney corpo#its the same with miku. miku is not trapped by her users. she IS the users.#lies down. sighs in visual culture major.

Pianoteq reviews
$100 is almost reasonable, but like I say, I never use it. It’s a nice library, but sounds a bit harsh and brittle compared to the other piano libraries. I actually don’t own this, just think the demos all sound pretty good. I still prefer the solo tone of the Imperfect Samples piano for solo stuff, but it can be ok for some solo work. I find I use it a lot in mixes, as it seems to blend well. This is my own sampled piano, so I’ll try not to be too biased. Great tone, but sometimes when recording solo stuff for AJ there is pedal noise, and I find myself needing to tweak velocity notes to get rid of the noise. However, if I was aiming for a clean/C7 sounds it might be the way to go, but since I have to hear this kind of sound on my keyboard when I play live gigs I grow weary of it. I can see a tremendous advantage in the possibility of 127 velocity layers without eating up Ram or disk space - probably feels nice to play. Something about modeled pianos still sounds off to me…maybe a little too clean. The Sad Piano is beautiful, melancholic and minimalistic contemporary piano tune with sentimental cinematic feel. For example one solo Pianoteq tune I improvised just got approved on AJ and on it I really wanted to create really long and resonating sound that you can’t really create easily with real piano nor sampled libraries. I especially love the fact that you can really make “unrealistic” pianos that still sound real. Minor tweaks to the parameters and voila, you are actually playing a different piano. This is one of the first VSTs that instantly gave me the feeling of actually playing a real instrument, it was just pure fun to play with. Does it feel and sound intuitive or is it “off”. Goodbye 20 gigs piano libraries and welcome tidy, clean and CPU efficient system that allows you to actually remake the whole piano in a few seconds.įor me the most imporant factor in any piano VST is the feeling that it gives when you dabble around. But the latest version nails it and I think I’m not turning back. I’ve hunted for modeled piano VST for quite some time and had my eyes on Pianoteq a few years ago, but the previous versions just didn’t quite “make it” in comparison to the best sampled libraries. Not sure if people are interested but I thought I’d write a short review on a modeled piano VST called Pianoteq.

Granted, you don't have to use the word builder at all, but if that's the case then there are other newer and cheaper choir libraries that might serve you better. With over 100 international awards to its credit, EastWest virtual instruments are widely considered to be the best available and are used by today's top working composers in all media. East Wests Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra Gold Complete gives you the sound and feel of a full orchestra, taking advantage of East Wests advanced Play sample-player software to deliver phenomenal details and realistic articulation. It is the most difficult library I've ever used and it requires a lot of fiddly detail work to get it to sound decent. I'd advise against getting EWQL Choirs unless you're okay with an extremely steep learning curve on the word builder. Gold XP is no longer available - I think it added the extra mic positions to Gold that are currently available as part of Platinum. I haven't used Silver, so I can't comment on how useful it is, but from what I've seen online, Gold seems to be the most popular of the three among people making their first big orchestral library purchase.ĮWQL SO runs on PLAY, which is included with the library. Silver has fewer articulations than Gold/Platinum (there's a comparison chart somewhere on the EWQL site). If you don't look at multiple mic positions and say, "This is a thing that I need!" then Gold will probably be a better choice. Gold and Platinum have the same articulations, but Platinum includes two additional mic positions and 24-bit samples rather than 16-bit.

OldSkoolVerb is a free algorithmic reverberation AAX, AudioUnit, and VST plugin for professional streaming, sound, and music production applications. This plugin implements a kind of “classic” stereo reverb algorithm which is technically simple yet optimal. It produces a very clear spatial image that blends well with the mix. OldSkoolVerb offers you a comprehensive set of parameters permitting you to achieve various reverbs ranging from plate reverb to room reverb to hall reverb sound. OldSkoolVerb is best suited for non-percussive and soft-attack sounds like vocals, piano, and pad sounds. A narrow “plate” range of settings, however, can be used on percussive sounds, with good results. In comparison to the freeware OldSkoolVerb plug-in, the Plus version features an additional spatialization module which provides additional control over reverb's spatial image and greatly increases reverb's density. Electric Pianos vs Digital Pianos: What's the Difference?
youtube
In today’s article, we’re going to tackle one of the most commonly asked questions by piano shoppers; What are the differences between electric pianos vs digital pianos? Are they just the same thing? And which one should you be shopping for?
Read on and find out!
Electric vs Digital Pianos: Are They the Same Thing?
Let's start by dealing with these somewhat clumsy labels and provide some clarity. While both digital and electronic pianos use electricity, they're most definitely not the same thing.
If you're looking for a piano that runs on electricity these days, whether on Amazon or in a showroom, you're most certainly looking for a digital piano, not an electric piano, unless you’re specifically looking for a vintage instrument.
What is an Electric Piano?
Electric pianos, at least as we define them within the music business, refer to a piano which uses an analog electric component to pick up and/or amplify the sound generated by a string or some other kind of resonating metallic object.
An electric guitar is actually a perfect comparison, as we have a resonating string that interacts with a magnetic field which generates a wave shape in the electric current that can be subsequently amplified.
Anyone familiar with 1970s music in the Motown, R&B, or pop vein will undoubtedly be familiar with the classic sounds of various electric pianos such as Rhodes, Wurlitzer, and Yamaha.
Why Electric and not Digital?
What exactly makes a piano electric and not digital? Well, quite literally, the lack of digits. Even though electrons were flowing around, none of it was being turned into ones and zeroes. There wasn't a microprocessor to be found, which is one of the most basic requirements to call something a digital device.
Under this set of definitions, there aren't any electric pianos being manufactured or sold today with the way technology has evolved over the past several decades, with maybe a couple of exceptions in the synth realm.
That said, certain vintage electric pianos are coveted on the second-hand market for their unique timbre, even though manufacturers like Roland, Casio, Kawai, Nord stage pianos, and various VST companies all produce very convincing electric piano patches.
What is a Digital Piano? 88-Key Digital Piano
Digital pianos generate tone in one of three ways. The first is by replaying samples of a real instrument that's been digitally stored, and this covers the vast majority of mid to high-end digital pianos currently being produced.
The second method involves generating different pitches based on a single PCM shape, and this is similar to how general MIDI sounds work. This method is, of course, common with synthesizers.
The last method involves tone being generated in real-time through complex algorithms, and this method is called modelling, which is still relatively rare among digital keyboards.
Which one Should you Consider?
Now that we’ve clarified the differences between Electric and Digital pianos, which one should you be looking for? Unless you're a professional keyboard player or vintage instrument enthusiast, you are most certainly looking for a digital piano.
Digital pianos have dramatically improved in quality and come down in price over the last 10 years for much wider accessibility. And just within the last two or three years, many instruments, even in the entry-level $500 USD range from companies like Alesis and Korg, will provide a sufficient musical experience to take your first piano lessons on.
Digital Piano Snapshot of the Digital Piano Market Today
The average price of a digital sold in 2020 is around $850 US or $1,100 Canadian with popular models like Yamaha digital pianos such as the Yamaha P125, Yamaha P45, and the YDP Arius and Clavinova series. Other best-selling models such as the Casio Privia PX and CDP series instruments also provide a stellar portable keyboard experience, and there are even arranger portable digital pianos available at this price point too.
Musical instruments in this price range are increasing offerings of modern technology such as Bluetooth Connectivity, quality hammer actions, believable sustain pedals, metronomes and various output jacks.
The best digital pianos in terms of quality range from $5,000-$15,000 USD, with some even featuring things like genuine acoustic grand and upright piano key actions with wooden keys and high-end speaker systems and amplifiers for exceptional piano sound.
Final Thoughts
We hope this article has helped clarify the differences between electric and digital pianos. As we’ve said, unless you’re specifically looking on the private market or with a vintage gear retailer, you’re almost 100% going to be looking at a digital piano.

Best Pianos for A Beginner
Neighbor bought a puncher? Learn scales!
Buying a digital piano is not a big deal, even the simplest models in this market cost a lot of money. Let's try to choose the right electric piano for you. When we wrote about choosing the best synthesizer not so long ago, we inadvertently constantly asked for comparisons with real keyboard tools and, above all, the piano. And as it turned out, not every synthesizer can play a game on this particular instrument. But what if you want to play exactly the piano, but a fairly large instrument for home hauling that requires regular tuning is not an option? Well, the answer is - buy a digital piano.
What is the principal difference between a digital piano and a synthesizer? First of all - it's a keyboard. It usually contains all 88 keys (there are "cropped" models) and their mechanics are fully weighed, ie when pressed, it looks like a characteristic "weight" (and the bass is "heavier" than high quality), allowing you to sharpen your finger working technique by real means. Conventional synthesizers in the lowest and middle price range have maximum semi-weighted mechanics and cannot be recommended to a novice pianist - you will not get the right technique, especially for weak fingers. High-end digital pianos have hammer mechanics that replicate this instrument - they are almost indistinguishable.
Then go to the pedals. While a pedal connection is an option for a synthesizer and its purpose is different from that of ordinary pianists, the use of pedals with a digital piano is an integral part of the playing technique; records.
Well and of course the sound. First, it is a rich set of samples recorded from a "live" instrument and not synthesized by a digital circuit. The sound of such an electronic piano as close to the studio as possible is in real time. The acoustics are again "piano" for piano sound, while conventional synthesizers use conventional broadband speakers.
There are three types of tools for filling:
The portable digital piano does not differ externally from the full-size 88-key synthesizer: the pedals are connected to it separately, it is mounted on a stand while playing.
The building "modern" - it's a light construction, with the keyboard fixed at the top, pedals on the lower cross. This instrument is convenient for light weight, it has minimal space at home, while fully imitating a "real" piano.
Classical case - This is a closed design that is as close as possible to a conventional piano. But it takes the same place, gaining only weight. On the other hand, there is no doubt that "warm brightness" exists - the tool body itself, resonant, works with the speaker system.
Yamaha NP-32
After the Casio Yamaha, being a little cheaper, it looks really pale - instead of a full-size keyboard, it only has 76 keys and the hammer mechanism isn't "delivered" to them. But isn't it that this compact digital piano is the best?
No, not in vain. The main trump card of "Yamaha" - is sound. Here, Casio really and significantly loses. Even so, it becomes unfortunate that the company did not install the best acoustics on the piano - the NP-32's sound is reflected in a new way in high-quality headphones. click here for more.
The set of effects is traditional, above all we notice a high-quality reverb and chorus. For the novice musician, the built-in looper is especially useful - after saving the playing of one instrument in your memory, you can switch modes and play another virtual instrument.
There is also a split keyboard mode that allows you to do the same "live" - one hand plays part of one instrument, the other - the other. There is also a MIDI interface, so the piano can always be used with all VST synthesizers.
Key benefits:
Great sound for your class.
There are no bad feelings you feel on the keyboard.
MIDI interface.
Yamaha NP-12
Here the keyboard is even smaller - 61 keys. However, the price difference "32." model is more than sensitive - is it really just because? Let's try to figure it out.
First, shortening the keyboard compensates for the built-in transfer function. Sure, when you play the passage through the entire keyboard, using takeover is inconvenient, but do you need it often?
The sound here is exactly the same as the actual Yamaha instruments, to reduce the cost that the built-in acoustics suffer from - power was reduced, the speakers sounded rougher. So they started playing, but something is missing ... That's right - the right pedal is optional, here's another secret of the price drop.
Most of them suffered from the keyboard. If the bass in the NP-32 was significantly heavier, the response of the keys does not depend on the octave and this significantly damages the resources. Should NP-12 be considered as an alternative? Maybe only if the issue price is so sharp.
Key benefits:
For your price - great sound.
Built-in looper, MIDI interface, connection to iOS devices.
Minuses:
"Dead" even by budget class keyboard synthesizer type standards.
CASIO PX-5S
Isn't that a synthesizer? After a simple and inexpensive digital piano, this question can really remind you. But no, despite the twists and turns of modulation, it's just a piano. And we notice a large test bank, whose wealth can only be envied. The keyboard is made of five more solid finishes - moderately thick keys are pleasant under the fingers, show fine sensitivity and the hammer mechanics work completely from a "living" tool. However, Casio has many more options - at least mention the possibility to share the keyboard in 4 zones, a built-in memory looper for 100 songs and a two-way MIDI interface (ie, the piano can not only "command" VST on the computer, but also play MIDI songs with him). It is curious that the built-in acoustics are not here, which clearly indicates the purpose of the instrument's concert. Well, the concert still needs to be played on a "remote control" and at home you can connect to your favorite speaker system. About me, we draw attention to the monstrous interface - a pianist, not a pianist, can better understand the settings menu. On the other hand, all the most frequently needed functions are always at hand. Advertisement
Key benefits:
Great sound.
Sensitive and pleasant to the touch keyboard.
Minuses:
Confusing settings with even more confusing instruction.

Help needed setting up audio interface
Logic pro X pros, lend me your prose. I can't figure out how to send a track to a bus and get a 100% wet signal back, the dry track audio is always present along with the wet signal.
What to fill in between songs?
I made a straight up vocal comparison with 4 microphones ranging from $6,500 to $250. I figured you guys would appreciate it!
What VSTs are artists like Shirobon and Luke Million getting that smooth, crisp daft punk vocoder?

Beethoven CD Sounds - Song 3 (Found Sound)
Here is the completed track on Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/kechones/beethoven-cd-sounds
This song took a lot more time and work to make than I expected, and even then did not quite match my vision for the project.
The “Found Sound” that I used can be found here: https://soundcloud.com/kechones/various
It is a collection of various noises from my computer including fans, clicking, and sounds from my optical drive. I was intrigued by how rhythmic the sounds of the optical drive were, so I set out to capture that and make something cool. I slowed down the CD portion of the track greatly, then started working with that.
This is where I started running into trouble: there was so much background noise with fans and such, and the actual rhythmic noises were so quiet in comparison that it wasn’t musical. I used a frequency analyzer to figure out where most of the fan noise and such was, and then I reduced those frequencies. I also boosted some frequencies that made the rhythm a little more “biting”. I also used reverb to make things resonate a bit more. I quieted some sounds, such as the door opening and closing, and loudened some other sounds.
I found that some of the CD drive sounds had a bit of discernable pitch to them, so to make them louder I also used an effect that doubled octaves and such to create some harmony on those. This was also useful on some of the background noise that I incorporated into the song. When all was said and done, you can hear the various aspects of the piece, even though I had a very difficult time getting everything to an acceptable level.
The rhythm was also very off-beat, so I used stretch markers to get things into more of a groove, then chopped up the groove quite a bit.
The song needed something, so, the CD I put in having been a Beethoven CD, I found a midi transcription of Beethoven’s 14th Piano Sonata online, pitched it up to Eb minor (because there were Eb pitches in a lot of the CD sounds), and put it on an organ VST. I also added a bit more organ VST stuff.
This song was a challenge and didn’t come out as some groundbreaking, lifechanging song, but I had fun figuring out how to make it sound interesting.

Final Submission - Creative Audio
Patrick Tuohy and I have been working on this project together in an effort to explore and pay tribute to the numerous soundtracks that span across the existence of the “Legend of Zelda” franchise.
The goal has been to create a small number of tracks in styles reminiscent of Zelda games throughout history. The games we selected were “The Legend of Zelda”, “The Ocarina of Time”, “The Minish Cap”, “The Phantom Hourglass” and “Breath of the Wild”.
The original game on the Famicon Disk System plays host to a very sparse soundtrack due to the lack of memory space available on the system. The music is of course very catchy and artificial, with that classic “chip-tune” sound which was unavoidable at the time. The first track in the playlist “Famicon Theory” is primarily my creation, in which I focused on recreating sounds commonly heard on that soundtrack using VST’s like Native Instruments’ “Massive” and “Serum”. Inside these instruments I used basic waveforms and tried not to alter them too much with filters and other effects. The most obvious sound that I wanted to try to recreate was the sine wave flute that shows up fairly regularly in the original soundtrack and makes appearances in several games that follow. As it stands, that recreation is just a sine wave with adjusted attack and release, with a light noise filter and Logic’s default bitcrusher over the top to make it sound shittier than it would out of a modern gaming console. One thing that I felt drawn towards in a lot of cases with these earlier tracks was a bit of extra drive. As a result a number of them ended up having a rolling drum beat that wouldn’t usually be present in a Zelda game for at least a decade to come.
“Hyrulean Fields” is based very heavily on “Hyrule Field” from the “Ocarina of Time” soundtrack, and out of all the songs in this playlist, it is by far the closest to it’s source material, and also the song Patrick and I worked most closely on together. The song features marching band snare rolls, horns and piano that all work together to create an impossibly upbeat mood. “Hyrule Field” sounds like a child setting off for adventure, and that feeling is what I tried to capture in our own track. In that regard I think I succeeded, however the downfall of the piece is that it is very short. Neither Patrick nor I have any traditional music training and thus a composition with that level of complexity was very difficult to emulate. The step forward in technology also gave Ocarina of Time a much easier time with it’s soundtrack as the Nintendo 64 allowed it to have over two hours of music, which no longer sounded like the chip-tune classics of old (although the soundtrack was still composed with synths rather than live recordings).
“Jungle Roots” is based on a number of more laid back tracks within “The Phantom Hourglass” OST, the kind of music appropriate for a beach or sleepy village. In comparison with “Hyrulean Fields”, it is much more stripped back musically and far slower. This change is reflected in general between the two games, because although “The Phantom Hourglass was released almost a decade after “The Ocarina of Time”, it was a much simpler game.
“Legend of Wild” is inspired but the lush sounds of Nintendo’s brand spanking new “Breath of the Wild” on the Nintendo Switch. The main theme for the game is a beautiful flowing composition that swells into massive crescendos and sweeping bridges which are absolutely out of my ability to recreate, however I was able to get a pretty good approximation of the sound palette used for that piece. As a result I’ve ended up with track that sounds like it could be in a b grade rip-off of the game, which is sort of what I was going for so I’m not too unhappy. In an attempt to emulate the brave choices for combat music within the game, I added a trap beat using orchestral percussion samples rather than a standard electronic drum kit; although I’m not sure that could be classified as particularly brave. All in all I think that aside from a few hitches in the time signature it’s a very successful piece and one of my favourites from the project.
Working with Patrick was a pretty bad experience to be honest, we’re such great friends that we would rarely get any work done whenever we hung out together. The times when we would work together for the most part of the semester resulted in me teaching Patrick how to use a DAW, which was a lot of fun and resulted in a few amusing pleasure projects such as our Holding Out for a Hero vaporwave remix. Only in the last couple of weeks did we really put our heads together and create some music as a team.
In terms of DAW’s, I used Logic Pro X and Patrick used Reaper, aside from the VST’s I mentioned earlier, we also experimented with a number of samplers, including Izotope Iris 2 (which is just the best).
